The bright, New York sun beat down on the bare dirt that littered the ground. Not a single cloud dotted the sky, nothing to block, or lessen the white hot heat radiating from the pale yellow orb that hung by invisible wires in the vast blue above. Huge heaps of garbage and left items once possessed by the humans dot the yard, rising higher and higher toward the empty skies.
It was on one of these mounds, a black and white female sat, her eyes locked on the ground before her. Her fur was damp with sweat, her tongue hanging from the side of her mouth in a desperate attempt to cool herself. Her sides heaved rapidly in tune with her hurried breath. Her ears lay plastered to her head, the fur shiny with the sweat pouring off her in endless amounts.
She lay crouched in the "shade" of a broken mattress, one corner poking out of the heap enough to provide some shelter from the blistering heat.

The sun shone in the clear, pale blue sky. No clouds blocked its golden light and cast shadows across the ground. Even on this spring day, it was blistering hot outside on the streets, threatening any creature with a coat still thick from winter. Garbage mounds towered precariously above the medium-sized ginger and cream Shiba Inu walking through the area. Objects such as old shoes, rotten food and chewed up hats caused the area to have a foul odor. Paper littered the ground, creating a crunching sound whenever the Shiba Inu stepped on them.
Her red-ginger pelt stood out like a flare in the sunlight. Against the dirt ground it looked as if a fire had spread, the pelt so glossy and clean it was as if the sweat had no effect on her. Truthfully, it did. The femme's tongue hung out as she walked, taking long, panting breaths. Her paws thudded dully against the ground, ignoring the occasional prick on her paw pads when she stepped on a shard of broken glass.
The dog's name was Fire.
Alone for some time now, the young dog was used to the dull silence around her. She normally came to the Loner lands to think and to clear her head of all the trauma that everyone was going through. One thing remained on her mind. Smokey. Her now tainted, former mate. He'd given his own life to protect her, and now he wandered through the shadows, only permitted to leave during the night. It brought tears to Fire's eyes thinking about it. Smokey had always loved the bright sunlight. She always wondered if he was thinking of her, or if he even remembered her anymore.
Looking up, Fire caught sight of the pure deputy, Selena, sitting atop a garbage mound. Curious and bored, Fire barked up at her. Maybe talking to another dog would get her tired mind distracted.
"Hello Selena," Fire barked, dipping her head respectfully.

The deputy turned her head lazily, looking the three or so feet down to the ground. The sun's harsh glare blinded her momentarily, leaving her without sight for mere seconds, until her eyes adjusted. She saw the usual, paper littered earth, and piles of old, tattered, human garbage. Standing amongst them, was the Shiba Inu, Fire. Selena wasn't that familiar with her. She had only seen her occasionally at the meetings Seth called to discuss new tactics to deflect the Tainted for one more night. She nodded her attention, standing and creeping down the mound so as not to disturb the delicate balance of the assorted items.
Upon reaching Fire, Selena dipped her head in greeting. Hey, she responded, It's nice too see you, really. I haven't seen one of... our kind for days. It's a little unnerving. She smiled simply, then let the corners of her lips sag.

Fire nodded up toward the deputy as she made her way down the garbage mound. Fire didn't know many dogs, and normally only talked with others to figure out new strategies. The streets of New York just felt so... empty and bare. Everywhere she looked she saw the depression from the disease that had swept the once alive city. Though Fire wasn't alive when humans were around, she'd heard many stories. Some were cruel with a hard hand, others kind and nurturing. Her mother told her that the humans had no fur- only on their heads! Fire had always pictured them as funny looking creatures.
She barely heard Selena's response, or noticed her come down. Shaking her head to clear her thoughts, Fire nodded in agreement. "It's nice to see you too. I know, it feels so... odd, really. I haven't seen our kind, or any tainted dogs for that matter either." An involuntary shudder ran through Fire at the thought of tainted dogs. Even if Smokey was now one of them, the dogs still frightened her all the same.
"Have you heard anything?" Fire questioned. Suddenly realizing that it might be confidential information, she mentally slapped herself. "Sorry. Is that private? I'm sorry, I'm just so curious."

The ebony and ivory shaded female nodded. She wasn't exactly sure why, but Fire's presence was very reassuring. Almost as if, now that she saw one in the flesh, besides Seth, she was positive that their fight was not a lost cause. That they were fighting to survive, and of course because those sick, sadistic freaks needed to get a serious life. Her hackles rose before she realized it. A tint of red touched the black fur of her cheekbones, and she relaxed herself.
I see. It's not all that private, but it's not really my place to say. Though, Seth will probably bring it up next meeting.
She shrugged, a smooth roll of her shoulder muscles, then turned her head back to the mound behind her. She saw nothing, but it didn't ease her mind at all. 'Never trust your eyes, only your nose, and what your instincts tell you.' The words of her father echoed in her head, again. She sighed to herself, geez. Even now his advice bounced around in the recesses of her mind. It was pointless to ignore, yet, somehow, she couldn't avoid it. Wait, no! She hated that sick, twisted creature who dared to call himself her father. He was Tainted, cursed, diseased... he had no place in her life. No way! Not ever!

ooc: ok =] thats ok with me
Every shadow that Fire saw out of her eye made her nervous. She hated this feeling, that she couldn't even walk in broad daylight anymore without a tainted watching her. It seemed like every shadow could be a tainted. But every shadow could also be Smokey. The dark shapes reminded Fire greatly of his smoky black pelt that was probably gone now to the mange. Her brown eyes clouded at the thought. Every day she thought that maybe if she closed her eyes, she'd wake up and this nightmare would end. She'd wake up curled up next to Smokey, and everything would be normal. But that was not the case. This was real.
This war was real. The tainteds were real. And they wouldn't stop.
"I hope you're right," Fire murmured. "I hate walking around, tensing at every thing that moves near me."
The wind blew, causing a small chill to enter the air. A wrapper rustled due to it, but to Fire it sounded like a pawstep. She tensed, turning to see nothing. Embarresed, the femme was greatful that her flame-colored fur hid the blush on her cheeks.

The whisper of the earth's breath brushed the fur along Selena's back, drying some of the sweat, cooling her instantly. She sighed visibly, dropping her hindquarters to the dirt and tucking her paws up against her chest. She looked down for a moment, before jerking her head back up to look at the ember red dog that stood in front of her. She had to appear relaxed, her tense behavior was causing Fire to be alert. Or so she thought. Something about the still of the air, the quiet of the afternoon was uncanny, and very unsettling. Selena shivered, before looking back behind her again.
Something was watching her. She could feel their stony gaze gracing her back. Her exposed back. Her soft, vulnerable neck stuck up like a target waiting to be struck. Subconsciously, she ducked her head, hunching her shoulders as much as possible without making it obvious, which was difficult, not to mention highly uncomfortable.
Yes. Though, I suppose we are stretched quite thin. Our armies are few, very few, in number. There is no way we could launch an attack and expect to win. The Tainted gain new recruits everyday, which so many pure catching this curse, and not to mention this disease is also limiting prey. We can't exactly hunt the tainted mice, or rats, or birds. They had poisoned blood, her voice faded out, mid-sentence. It was rather pointless to explain, everyone sorta knew the situation.
Yet, even though they did, they couldn't do anything to improve the situation. It sucked. Really.

Shooting stars fall.. From the vast open night sky.. If you know me well.. Then follow my trail down the sky.. A rather large figure tromped over the hill, only stopping briefly to catch his breath. The burning sun beat down on his coat, inflaming it greatly. He stopped briefly, when catching his breath, to bathe himself, so that he coat stayed cool. His head was high, despite the heaviness of his body, due to his fur length, and heat which made his body heavy. He panted, but only slightly, his tongue barely out of his mouth, barely pulling in and out. He stopped once more, narrowing his orbs on a femme, sitting under the edge of a mattress, and by the looks of it, she was trying to receive shelter from the blazing heat. Her narrowed his orbs further to see that she was Selena, deputy of the pures, and mate to Seth, leader of the pures. He sat for only a moment before an ember-colored femme approached Selena and bark, Hello Selena, in a rather friendly tone.
The virale(male) took a couple steps forward, watching as the deputy trotted down the mound toward the ember femme. He didn't watch them or listen to them, rather he kept his orbs narrowed on the mound. His opened his maw slightly, drinking the scent in. This scent was familiar to him, yet different as well.. He had a strong, nagging feeling that he couldn't shoulder off. He trotted over to the femmes, dipping his head. Good evening, Selena. he barked, then he turned his head to the ember femme, Good evening, I do not know your dubbance but I shall inform you of mine, if that's ok with you. he barked, with a bit of amusement in his tone. I am dubbed, Shooting Star. But I go by, Star. You may call me of your choice, as may Selena. he continued. But all the while he was uneasy.
I watch the [SHOOTING STAR]s fly by.. Star turned his body angle so that it was half-way facing the mound, and he still hadn't sat down. He had seen a tainted dog not too long ago, maybe about three days, and right now he was paranoid at the scent drafting from the mound every once in a while. His lip curled in the beginning of a snarl and he took a step toward the mound, agitated at the fact that a tainted dog could be be lurking in the shadows. Of course, he could be wrong, the tainted dog could have left right before Selena first came, and his scent still lingering. But Star held his suspicions high, not dropping his guard an inch. He flicked his auds to the dogs, now behind him, to show that his actions were not to them, just in case. After a while he went back to them, but he still stared at the mound, suspicions as high as ever, as well as his guard.
Yes, I do agree Selena. I do anticipate Seth's next meeting. I also have been trying to find recruits for the pure, but I haven't had much luck, as my siblings went to live their own lives, and since my horrible father last saw them, they have no interest in fighting, which is why I wonder about their security. But, enough about that, it hasn't been going well, as I might see. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that Seth is stressing himself to find more fighting pures. If so, you can count me in, I anticipate the fight, as I do most. he barked a reply, keeping out many details about himself on purpose. He kept his gaze on the mound the whole time. If you nee-- he stopped suddenly. He could of sworn that he had just seen movement in the shadows of the mound, he continued, focusing on the mound more than ever now. Fully alert. Excuse me, if you need any assistance in fighting then, as I said before, am ready and anticipate. You can tell Seth that too f you want. he finished, and then stared at the mound, all attention there, but his auds were still flicked back to hear any words.

((It's ok with me =] I might bring Hornet in too after a couple more posts))
Fire listened intently to Selena's words. Though she tried not to, she also noticed the tension in the other dog as well. Fire knew that something didn't feel right, and no matter how hard she tried to hide it, it was simply impossible. It was clear on the young ember-colored femme's face that she was nervous. Whether Selena saw it, Fire didn't know. Though she didn't want to be known as a coward, it was simply too hard to hide her rising fear. After all, who knew where the tainteds were at this moment? Were they watching, waiting for the shadows of nightfall to strike? The thought made Fire sick.
Her ears pricked at the sound of pawsteps approaching the two. She faintly felt her neck fur begin to rise, and a small snarl tugged at her lips. Relief washed over her face, however, at the sight of the male Australian Shepherd walking towards them. Though she didn't recognize him, she could tell just by scent that he was a pure. Her body relaxed, her neck fur flattening again and the panting grin appearing on her face. Fire listened as the dog introduced himself as Shooting Star- or Star as Fire preferred to call him.
"Nice to meet you, Star," Fire said. "My name is Fire, and you can call me... well, Fire." Her voice also held humor in it. It was clear that she was relieved to lose the tension in the air.
Now it was Star's turn to talk. Fire again listened, as she proffered to do instead of talk. Hearing what Star said made her nervous. So he also couldn't find many other dogs around. Were the tainted really managing to curse all of them? How much longer would Fire even make it? Fire kept her ears pricked, waiting to hear what Selena had to say.

Selena looked at the new male who had come upon her into the junkyard. She regarded him with a casual eye, feigning interest. He was big, yes, muscluar? You could never tell with just a glance. He seemed haughty, confident that he could succeed, or die trying. That was a good quality, that was well sought after in a warrior. Be that warrior male, or female. He called himself Shooting Star. She had to smother a snicker, but it barely showed. She masked it with ease, calling on her long hours of practice on her poker face.
Yes, Star. Your services are appriciated. And I am aware of the situation; if you could perhaps patrol the borders, looking for new recruits. The pure are definately stretched awfully thin. She shook her head slowly, in silent agreement with herself.
The wind that had blown across before, now picked up again; just as thick clouds rolled across the sun, throwing the day into a murky gray/black shadowland. An instant feeling of immense dread passed from Selena's head down to the tip of her tail, sending shivers down her spine into her toes, and every single strand of fur stand errect across her body. She had everyright to feel panic.
From the shadows stepped a dog. Or was it a dog? It once had fur, that much was obvious, but that fur was long gone. The only remenants of that were the white, cloud fluffy tuffs handing from his ears, muzzle, and in a zig-zagged mohawk along the crown of his head. He had a total of six teeth. All of them only about a centimeter in lenth, and no gums. His eyes were a milky, opaque, sea greenish color, hinting that he was indeed blind. What was left of him was a mass of copper brown, withered skin, splotched in deep earth brown spots. They appeared to be the aftermath of burns.
He was a very small dog, standing only about a foot at the shoulder, his head way to large for his scrawny body, his feet so small it seemed a miracle he could stand at all. His lips were drawn back into a hideious snarl, the loose skin over his eyes tightened into an almost human-looking scowl. This was Oron.
Hello, he hissed between broken and gumless teeth, what bringssss you all together? Having a tea party, Sssselna? You really have gotten ssssoft. He grinned maliciously, exposing his rotten mouth and unleashing the horrid stentch coming from his esophagus.

A grey peppered male flashed deep brown eyes at the blazing sun. His tongue fell from his mouth and hard pants fell from his lips. Seth layed his ears back in agitation and shook out his pelt. His efforts were to no use though as his thick, long fur stuck to his sweaty body. The brute let out a sigh and padded on, slowly, slowly walking on. He saw the foggy silhouette of the dump, it was to hot that he couldn't see any far off image clearly. Seth shifted his gaze behind him. He felt watched, paranoid. The canine's usual problem was haunting him again. Paranoia. Seth whimpered as his paw struck a sharp metal object. Blood dripped slowly from his pad. He licked it gently and walked forward, limping.
The border collie's plumy tail now dragged on the ground. He stopped to lick the dust off his paw. The sun's fiery shape was high in the sky and still burning into the male's body. Seth looked up to a nearby building, it's shadowy depths welcomed him. The alpha took a step forward but heard the sounds of anxious dogs, happy whimpers hitting his ears. Seth growled and glared at the shaded building's inside. As he gazed closer a single shape, small though, was outlined against the shadows. Even the tainted couldn't escape what the darkness revealed. Nothing was purely dark. seth cast a last glance at the building and turned away.
The dog was padded towards the Great Square where his group of dogs were located. A scent hit his nostrils though that made his stop and raise his fluffy tail. Selena! Seth let out a small yip of joy and leaped into a swift run. As his paws carried him closer to the dump he burst into a sprint. Her scent intoxicated him and made his weak limbs full of power. Seth's chocolate brown eyes danced with pleasure as Selena's smell was closer. Then her shape came into view. She was talking with another dog. Then a shadow closed over the sun's weakening yet protective rays. Everything seemed to be in slow motion.
Seth saw the heavy clouds drift in front of the sun. Then the Tainted dog came from the shadows. The male stopped for a brief second but then his heart skipped a beat as he saw the dog's teeth gleaming. He let out a strong bark and then leaped forward. the border collie's strong legs and powerful shoulders carried him forward at amazing speed. His feet hit the ground with light taps, he was running at top speed, nothing would stop the brave male. He saw the dog talking and then Seth reached the canines. Seth let out a threatening and furious snarl. His white fangs glinted with a deadly aura. The grey dog cast an almost poisonous gaze at the Tainted dog.
Go, now! Seth's voice was now pure order, if the Tainted dog wouldn't leave soon he would make sure that a barrel of gasoline was dumped upon the rat's body.

Shooting stars fall.. From the vast open night sky.. If you know me well.. Then follow my trail down the sky.. Star dipped his head to Selena, listening intently to her words. The feeling of danger still nagged at him. He hated this, but he slowly turned away to go check the borders when he was suddenly stopped. He stopped, mid-step, when the clouds slowly covered the sun, littering the place in shadows. He knew that he was breaking the law by no following an order but he couldn't leave them alone, so he turned around and lept in fron of them, growling deeply. He watched as Oron took his place at the top of the hill, long before Seth arrived he heard the light stepping of pawsteps. He stepped aside a little so that when Seth arrived, he could have room. He growled deeply and fluffed up his fur so that he was now twice his size. The noise in the background grew louder and he could tell that Seth wasn't expecting Oron at the moment, then as Seth got closer he felt anger pulsing from the male.
Go now! he growled at them all, it was an order. Normally, Star wasn't one to defy orders, but at the moment he stayed planted to the ground, his fur still fluffed up, a low and loud growl emitting from his throat. He didn't even lift his paws to let them cool from the ground, that even though the sun was covered, still burned. He let his claws extend from their covering and scrape the ground. Go back where you came from, you rotten excuse for a dog! he yelled at Oron. You have no place to speak with Selena like that, and don't even try to speak to Seth like that or I'll rip your tail from your scrawny butt! He threatened, this anger, he knew it well. He hated Tainted dogs so much that if one ever tried to touch a pure he'd bite it's head off. He was refusing Seth's order to go, yes, by planting his paws to the ground and threatening the Tainted dog. But right now Star could care less. I'm sorry Seth, but I'm staying here/ he whispered through his angry tone.
I watch the [SHOOTING STAR]s fly by.. Star clenched his teeth and stepped forward a little, but not so much so as Oron could leap and land on him. Come down here and fight like a true dog you coward! he yelled once more. Except his other side kicked into his thoughts for a moment. 'They all used to be us, right? They used to be sweet and kind like us. They used to have fur and be gentle and caring. It's not their fault that they were cursed, maybe if we stopped insulting them, showed them kindness but still stayed clear of their disease they might all die and leave us pures alone, so that it would end up as all pures.........' He shook his head and snarled again, his lip curled back in a snarl, displaying his large, dangerous canines that had a pink tent to them as proof that he had killed many times before. As proof that he wasn't cowardly to kill, he actually anticipated fights until they were done, then he regretted the bloodshed, but when another fight came even if it was right afterwards, his anticipation would return.
Star turned to Selena and Fire, he looked at Fire more and narrowed his orbs, concern showing, You need to leave. Me and Seth can handle this bundle of fur. he told them both, mostly to Fire, considering she wasn't the alphess. His tired, heavy limbs that had trumped along from the heat were now blasted with energy. The energy surged through him, filling up every tired spot, making it brighten with a newfound strength. That strength came from the joy of finding a new home, and what better place than to be with the alphess and alpha of all the pures? It also came from Seth's quick arrival, and the need to protect his new pack mates. He looked at Seth through the corner of his right orb, waiting and hoping for a signal that would lead Star's fangs into Oron's flesh. Star he mumbled to him in case he hadn't heard through his running rampage that had brought him here.

Fire
Fire's fur bristled like a rising flame, her normally fluffy pelt appearing much more thick. The panting grin on her face disappeared, and was replaced by the fearsome snarl that she rarely let loose. When someone Fire knew was in danger, she changed. Her whole attitude changed. This tainted dog had just added fuel to the dying down flames. Brown eyes narrowed, she stood her ground, growls erupting from her throat and threatening to turn into a roar. Though the dog appeared small, and with little teeth appeared harmless, she knew very well that one bite from its infected teeth would be the end of her.
Fire stepped out of the way as Seth appeared, giving her leader room. Even in her fury she managed to keep her sense, and slowly she calmed down. Her white fangs still shown in the snarl, her fur still fluffed up to make the slightly smaller dog appear large. Her fur was a blaze, shining down like a flare in the brilliant light. Fire took a step back, not taking her eyes of the tiny tainted dog that stood before them. One thing was for certain, Fire would not let her guard down.
She remained silent. Fire did not wish to aggravate Oron anymore then needed. Maybe they'd all escape unharmed. But she also knew that letting her guard down could be fatal. Fire kept her fearsome demeanor still, though she kept quiet. Talking and insults never came that easily to her. Her ears were now flattened against her skull.
You need to leave. Me and Seth can handle this bundle of fur.
Star's words made Fire tense. No. Never again would she leave when others were in danger. She'd made that mistake before. But never again would she. Fire shook her head stiffly. Her voice slightly shaky, she replied. "I'm not leaving." To prove it, Fire advanced one step, still remaining barely an inch behind the other dogs though. Again she tensed up, feeling another pair of burning eyes behind her. She looked, just barely seeing a form explode through the shadows. The large shape made it's way next to Oron, and Fire found herself looking at the tainted deputy. Hornet.
How many more will come? she wondered desperately.
Hornet
The sunset cast long shadows across the ground, giving the large hybrid dog/wolf plenty of cover. His mangy fur had flies and mosquitoes buzzing freely around it, some crawling toward his eyes. The brute ignored them though, simply shaking his head as he walked swiftly toward his destination. What good would it do to slow himself down by snapping at meager insects? No good, exactly. The dog could hear the snarls and barks from far away. And it had caught his attention.
Hornet.
Hornet was his name. Half wolf, half husky, he had the killer instinct not many possessed. His snarl, filled with rotten, broken teeth, was just as frightening. His pelt, now nothing but various clumps of fur, used to be as glossy as any dog's. Now, just the sight of him sent other creatures running. He liked it. His loud claws tapped against the ground with every step he took, as the scents of dogs grew nearer he grew more eager.
Soon the dogs came into view. Ignoring the garbage and trash scattered around him, Hornet watched silently from the shadows. At first, it had just been Selena, the pure deputy. Then the ember-colored Shiba Inu, whom he learned was called Fire, appeared. He listened, laughing at the conversation in his mind. Just as he planned to leave, another dog appeared. Hornet just managed to pick up the other dog's name. Star.
Hornet sighed. This was boring. What was the point of listening to a few pures ramble about how they could stop them? He stood up, preparing to leave when he heard Oron's voice. He hadn't even seen the small tainted, but now there the dog was, addressing the other pures. Interest caused Hornet's scab-covered ears to prick forward. He became even more interested, however, when none other then the pure leader Seth appeared, telling Oron to leave. Hornet laughed mentally. These dogs needed to learn that it took pure force to get a tainted to listen.
No longer wanting to watch and listen, the hybrid burst out of the shadows, shoving past the ember Shiba Inu called Fire. In a flash, the gray mange-covered dog stood beside Oron, taking one step forward yet remaining in the growing shadows. He shot the pures a grin, his yellow, rotten teeth showing.
"Leave?" Hornet growled, addressing Seth with a cool voice. "Why should we leave? This is loner territory, we may stay here if we please." Snarling, Hornet felt the clumps of fur on his neck beginning to rise. Finally, a good fight. What a great day this was turning out to be.
{{Bleh post. I'm braindead. Oh well. Hope you guys don't mind that I brought Hornet in}}

Selena gazed down at the ugly, sun-scarred runt in front of her. He was tainted yes, but she didn't feel at all threatened in the least. He was very small in comparison to the four, full-sized adults snarling at him. Not to mention he was completely blind, otherwise his eyes would be tinted a deep blood red hue. This was the first tainted to address her directly, besides her father, so it came as a bit of a shock at first. She just continued to stare blankly at the not-so-cute little fellow taunting her.
Actually, we were discussing your down fall, she said simply, renowned for her bluntness. Impeccable timing, I might add. She continued calmly, her voice an intricate mask of serenity. Her ears flattened slightly at the venom in Star's voice, but she held her ground. Sorry, Star. I'm the deputy. I have a duty, and I'm not going anywhere. I can fight too, you know.
She caught Seth's scent before she saw him. She stood up eagerly, her tail wagging emphatically. Though when he did arrive, he snarled, commanding her to flee. Her tail sagged, as did her ears and head. Yes sir, she said without hesitation. Though she did not back down, she hung back, eying the tainted tiny.
Oron sneered, his hiss rising. He shifted his gaze between the three, now four. Oh, hello Sssseth. Care to join ussss? They were jusssst about to attempt to sssssubdue me. He flashed them a near toothless grin. This just kept getting more and more interesting. Puss dribbled in large, gooey clumps from his left ear, sizzling once it hit the ground.
He smiled as Hornet drew near. He nodded slowly at his words. Yessss. Sssstupid puressss, he spat the word like he would phlegm from the back of his esophagus. He snapped his gaze back to the pures, his blind eyes glaring coldly at them.
